The reputation of an Architectural firm can be measured in two ways: by the work it has done and by the quality of professional services it provides. And, although our principals have amassed an enviable number of design awards and other recognition for our work, of far greater importance is the number of clients who have continued to return, time and time again, because they have come to appreciate the job we do for them.
Our number one priority and responsibility as design professionals is to provide the best possible service to our clients. This has been a primary goal of Holmes Architects and is evident by the fact that our major client base has been comprised of clients who we have served continuously over extended periods of time. These clients have come to know that they can expect consistent high quality results from Holmes Architects, not only as designers but in all areas of practice, including their strong commitment to on-time / in-budget project delivery. That’s exactly why you will find that, with us, you will be working directly with either Dwight Holmes, FAIA or Scott Holmes, AIA for the duration of the project; not only during the formulation of the project’s design but also during construction and long after the job is complete.
Holmes Architects offers full Architectural Services and is committed to client satisfaction, excellence in professional service, and quality of design. Absolutely nothing we do is more important to the success of your project than the quality of the documents we produce. After all, these are the tools by which we communicate your ideas and our designs to the people you hire to build your project.
We utilize state-of-the-art computer hardware and software, including Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems, to produce our professional documents. All our software is continually updated to the latest versions of Adobe, Microsoft and AutoDesk products.
Our portfolio is focused primarily on the design of public, private and parochial schools but also includes Museums, Churches, Chapels, City Halls, Community Centers, Youth Centers, Athletic Facilities, Auditoriums, and Modern Homes.

Dwight E. Holmes, FAIA has spent his entire professional career in the Tampa Bay Area, beginning in 1962 with nationally prominent Architect, Mark Hampton, FAIA. In 1972 he joined H. Dean Rowe in the establishment of Rowe Holmes Associates Architects which was recipient of over 100 local, State and National design awards. In 1980 Dwight was recipient of the Tampa Bay/AIA Medal of Honor for Design Excellence and in 1982 AIA/Florida conferred upon him its highest honor for design, the Award of Honor. In 1983 he was advanced to the College of Fellows of The American Institute of Architects. In 2000 Rowe Holmes was recognized by AIA/Florida as one of Florida’s three most outstanding architectural firms of the millennium. From 1992 to 2009, Holmes was the senior principal of Holmes Hepner & Associates Architects who in 2002 was recognized as both the Tampa Bay/AIA and AIA/Florida” Firm of The Year”.
We strongly believe that any well designed building should be inherently sustainable... that’s just basic good design! But unfortunately, over the years, the majority of our fellow design professionals have ignored these basic concepts. This led to the development of green standards which now serve to regulate, encourage and help those who have not shared these philosophies. Our interest in sustainable design is not a recent phenomenon. Responding to the unique environment of Florida has been a common theme and goal in our work.
The Logan Residence, designed by Dwight Holmes, FAIA while principal at Rowe Holmes Architects in Tampa, has literally become a textbook example of how to naturally ventilate buildings in Florida. Designed almost thirty years ago, it can be found in the textbook Sun, Wind and Light and was utilized in a case study by the University of California at Berkeley where it was tested for performance.
For several years in California, Scott Holmes, AIA worked as an Environment Engineer at ERRG, Inc. cleaning up government superfund sites and then as an Air Quality Inspector for BAAQMD. Scott Holmes has degrees both in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry, and passed the Engineer-In-Training exam. This experience has provided him with unique insight and knowledge in green building.
In 1972, Dwight Holmes joined H. Dean Rowe, FAIA in the formation of Rowe Holmes Associates Architects, a Tampa based firm whose work over the ensuing twenty years was recipient of over 100 design awards and was featured in numerous publications throughout the United States and abroad. During this period in 1989, at age thirteen, Scott Holmes, AIA joined the Rowe Holmes firm, and he has remained with his father Dwight Holmes for his entire architectural career. Dwight Holmes and Dean Rowe separated their professional practices in 1992 and in 1995, Dwight joined with Peter Hepner, AIA to form, Holmes Hepner & Associates Architects. For the fourteen years, Holmes Hepner & Associates Architects endeavored to maintain those standards of excellence in architecture.
The evolution of the practice of Dwight Holmes as the senior principal of one of Florida’s most distinguished architectural firms was acknowledged by the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects in the year 2000 when Rowe Holmes Associates Architects was recognized as one of the most outstanding firms in the twentieth century and again in 2004 when Holmes Hepner and Associates was recognized by both Tampa Bay/AIA and the Florida Caribbean region AIA as the Florida “Firm of the Year”. Dwight continues to be a leader in his field, and both he and Scott are fully committed to the pursuit of excellence in their work.
After being located in downtown Tampa for over forty-five years, in 2009 Dwight relocated to Pinellas County, to form Holmes Architects with his son Scott.
